Thus, when the gut-punching twist of the film reveals itself - Taki stops switching with Mitsuha, and heads to Itomori to find her, only to learn that she and the entire town were destroyed three years ago by a rogue comet, which is why the switching has stopped - bit hurts all the more and, from there, the film becomes a race for Taki-as-Mitsuha to succeed in reconnecting with Mitsuha and preventing the disaster. As Mitsuha, while Taki is clueless of the finer points of high school girlhood (forgetting to wear a bra in gym class, not crossing the legs while wearing a skirt), he helps Mitsuha improve her life in ways both nice - he manages to turn a roadside vending machine into something resembling the cafés that Mitsuha longs to go to, and even manages to get a girl to confess her love to Mitsuha (in a funny aside that the film regrettably doesn't explore further). Mitsuha makes Taki more outgoing and kind, to the point she actually sets him up on a date with his superior at work he crushes on. We then see the two grow and change through their experiences with each other and as each other. Taki is a Tokyo kid just sort of blindly drifting through life with no real passion outside of architecture. Plus, it helps the viewer - particularly the Western one - see the benefits and drawbacks of both of their circumstances and empathize with how each of them feel.

But, as the movie revolves around the fact that they frequently switch bodies without warning, this is a narrative necessity. In the case of Taki and Mitsuha from Your Name, we certainly spend an equal amount of time with both of them.
